Safety & Accident Prevention

Stairs: Hold the Handrail

Stairs are one of the most common places for accidents at work. Most stair falls don't happen on dramatic staircases. They happen on ordinary in-house stairs, when someone is in a hurry, has both hands full or is looking at something other than the steps. This demo shows the same workplace staircase (13 risers of about 17 cm, 29 cm going, anti-slip nosing stripes, handrail) walked down twice.

✔ Correct: slow, one step at a time, eyes on the steps, one hand sliding along the handrail. The worker arrives safely.
✘ Wrong: rushing down with a box in both hands, no hand on the rail and no view of the steps. The foot overshoots a nosing and slips. From that moment the worker becomes a physics ragdoll (cannon-es) and falls down the steps. The impacts are marked in red.

Key points

Walk, don't run. Most stair falls start with a missed or half-missed step, and speed makes that much more likely.
Always hold the handrail. A hand on the rail can stop a slip that would otherwise turn into a fall. It only works if the hand is already on the rail.
Keep one hand free. Don't carry anything that needs both hands or blocks your view of your feet. Use the lift or a second trip, or ask a colleague.
Watch the steps. No phone, no reading while walking. Keep stairs free of objects, report worn nosings and poor lighting.
Typical injuries from stair falls: head injuries, wrist and arm fractures (from trying to catch yourself), back and spine injuries, sprained or broken ankles.

Note: This is a simplified simulation for teaching. The walk is keyframed, and the fall uses a simple ragdoll of rigid boxes joined by limited joints. Injuries are shown symbolically. Real fall outcomes vary widely.
