Safety & Accident Prevention

Human on the stairs (motion capture)

A life-size human in work clothes walks up a straight staircase, turns on the landing and walks back down. The motion comes from real motion-capture recordings; the feet are placed exactly on the steps with IK.

Key points

Stair dimensions — rise 17.5 cm, going 28.5 cm: 2 × 17.5 + 28.5 = 63.5 cm is within the step rule (59–65 cm). Uniform steps are the most important fall prevention.
Handrail — on both sides, 90 cm above the nosing, extended at top and bottom. “Use handrail” shows the right hand sliding along.
Contrast strips — dark nosings keep every step visible when walking down, where most serious falls happen.
Trip — first, simplified fall simulation: the foot catches on the nosing, the upper body keeps moving (ragdoll physics).

What is real?

Upper body, arms, head and hip motion are motion-capture data from the CMU Graphics Lab Motion Capture Database (takes 07_01, 83_35, 113_20). Foot placement is computed by the demo because the recorded stairs had different dimensions. The 3D model was created with MakeHuman/MPFB (CC0).

Limits

Turning has no recording of its own (curve with the walk clip); the hand slides instead of re-gripping.
Going down: recording of a different person (subject 113), retargeted to the same skeleton.
The fall is a simple rigid-body ragdoll – not a biomechanically validated accident reconstruction.

Controls: round trip / up / down, speed, handrail, slow motion, trip. Mouse: rotate and zoom.
